Dr. Isaac Rutenberg received a PhD in Chemistry from the California Institute of Technology. His research focused on new methods for producing high-performance plastic materials. Dr. Rutenberg finished the degree in 2004, and in 2005 his research advisor won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry.

Currently, Dr. Rutenberg is a Patent Agent for the international law firm of Mintz Levin Cohn Ferris Glovsky and Popeo, PC. As a Patent Agent, he helps companies, universities, and research institutes worldwide obtain and maintain intellectual property (IP) portfolios. Although  based in California, he regularly travels to Kenya and remains active in IP matters relevant to Kenya.

Dr. Rutenberg is a regular contributor of IP-related articles to the Exchange, a magazine published by the securities exchanges of the East African region (including the Nairobi Stock Exchange). In addition, he is currently researching and writing about the role of government in encouraging protection of IP assets.

Dr. Rutenberg is a strong advocate of protecting intellectual property in ways that foster development in Africa. This includes encouraging Africans to partake in the IP systems of developed countries. He has appeared on CNBC Africa to discuss IP issues, and led discussions about IP at several conferences in Kenya and the US. He is currently helping to organize further IP discussions at the SecureICT Conference scheduled for October in Nairobi, Kenya.
