NgateGen, Inc. (A biotech Start-Up Company)



Dr Hortense Dodo-Konan is the President of NgateGen, Inc. a biotech start up company developing transgenic crops.  She is also the President of Nano Bio Institute, an international training and teaching academy of sciences, biotechnology and Nanotechnology established to train Africans to become successful entrepreneurs in the agricultural and technical sectors.  Dr Dodo-konan is a co-founder of “Institute Geniocrate” a specialized school targeting and training children with high IQ in Africa.

Dr Dodo-Konan is a professor of Food Biotechnology and Molecular Biology at Alabama A&M University (AAMU), Normal, AL.  She was first to develop hypoallergenic peanut via transgenic technologies as a solution to peanut allergy for which she hold a patent. Her research expertise encompasses DNA cloning and sequencing, plant tissue culture, plant genetic transformation, gene silencing using RNAi technology, and biofortification of peanut and yams.  She developed a successful research and teaching program in Food Biotechnology and Plant Molecular Biology at AAMU and trained many National and international students. Dr Dodo-Konan has been successful in acquiring several millions in extramural funds as Principal Investigator and with other collaborators.

Dr Dodo-konan was a Fulbright Scholar at the Univ of Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire, School of Biosciences, (2007-08). During that time she extensively promoted the importance of a Biotech program at the University and the benefits of transgenic agriculture and genetically modified crops as one of the best solutions to the food crisis in Africa. 

She was the biotech advisor to VITIB (Village of Information Technology and Biotechnology), and was instrumental in establishing a biotechnology program for the Free Trade Zone of Cote d’Ivoire (2007- 09) to attract foreign direct investment and foreign companies in Africa. She also organized and led a team of scientists and attorneys to write Biosafety laws and regulations to be voted upon soon by the National Assembly of Cote d’Ivoire. 

Dr Dodo-konan has been a scientific consultant for many international organizations including: the FAO (Food Agricultural Organization of the United Nation) in Rome (Italy), Vienna, (Austria), the Winrock Foundation in the Kazakhstan and the Kirghizstan, and the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture, (IITA) in Ibadan (Nigeria). She took a leadership role in promoting Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) and transgenic agriculture in Burkina Faso, Benin, Cote d’Ivoire, Congo, Ghana, Kenya, Senegal, Togo, Guadeloupe, Puerto Rico…and more.

Dr Dodo-konan holds a Bachelor degree (1979), two Master’s degrees: (1) Animal Sciences from the University of Abidjan, Cote D’Ivoire (1981) and (2) Food Sciences, from the University of Georgia in Athens GA (1985), and a PhD degree in Food Biotechnology from Penn State University, PA (1992).

She has been honored with many awards including 1) lifetime achievement award by Alabama A&M Research Institute, (Jan 09), 2) Outstanding contribution for the promotion of Transgenic agriculture in Africa by the Forum of Science and Technology of Abidjan CI (Feb 07), 3) The Sepracor Research Excellence Award by the American Academy of Allergy Asthma and Immunology (AAAAI –Mar 02), 4)   the “George Washington Carver Award for Excellence and Outstanding Achievement” by Alabama A&M Univ, Apr 01), 5) the  Best Researcher of the Year for 1999-2000. .. and many more.  

Dr Dodo-Konan has published numerous peer reviewed scientific articles and book chapters and has presented over hundreds scientific conferences.  She is an active member of many professional scientific organizations. She speaks English and French fluently and can read write in Spanish.
